Pressure Ulcer Treatment at Home

What is required to treat pressure ulcers at home

Prevention is essential in the treatment of pressure ulcers.
For more details, read the article „Pressure ulcers: what they are, what causes them and what treatment exists”.

Once they occur, pressure sores treatment depends on the stage and depth of the lesion.

You can clean first-stage ulcers with mild soap and water and cover them with a moisturising lotion.

More advanced ulcers may require medical care. Nurses, or even surgeons in the case of serious bedsores, can clean the wound with saline and cover it with a special bandage. If a wound becomes infected, you may need to take antibiotics.

What types of bedsores can be treated at home

Pressure ulcers are grouped according to the severity of symptoms. Stage I is the mildest. Stage IV is the most severe.

  • Stage I: A red, painful area on the skin that does not whiten when pressed. This is a sign that an pressure sore may be forming. The skin may be warm or cold, firm or soft.
  • Stage II: The skin blisters or forms an open sore. The area around the wound may be red and irritated.
  • Stage III: The skin now develops an open, sunken hole called a crater. The tissue under the skin is damaged. You may be able to see body fat in the crater.
  • Stage IV: The pressure ulcer has become so deep that there is damage to muscles and bones and sometimes tendons and joints.

The Care Hub's partners are certified and experienced nurses, whom we would welcome into our home.
Because the safety of you and your loved ones is paramount, we interview each nurse (2 of our colleagues attend the interview), ask for and verify medical clearance, certificate of behavioral integrity, licensure and (if needed) references.
Many of our partners are recently retired or close to retirement age because we believe they have a wealth of life experience, great patience and respect for the people they care for, and a natural desire to care for others. But we also work with people of other ages who are looking for flexible work and are also kind, respectful and empathetic.
Some useful general strategies for treating pressure ulcers can include:

- Using pillows or foam cushions to support the affected areas and relieve pressure by changing the body position.
- Gently washing very minor wounds with mild soap and water and cleaning open wounds with a saline solution at each dressing change.
- Application of dressings. These protect the wound and speed up healing. Options that are antimicrobial or hydrocolloid, or that contain alginic acid, may be best.
- Using topical creams: antibacterial creams can help fight an infection, while barrier (moisture-fighting) creams can protect damaged or vulnerable skin.
- Incontinence management. This might involve the use of cleansers, barrier creams, incontinence nappies, etc.
- Changing bed linen: Some mattresses, such as static foam, help relieve pressure. Also, some beds have a pump that provides a constant flow of air into the mattress. A doctor can help you recommend the best type. Special mattresses to prevent bedsores are available to buy online.
- Adjusting your diet: Although there is limited evidence that a specific diet can help treat bedsores, supplementing with protein can stimulate healing and reduce the size of sores. Consuming enough essential nutrients and plenty of water can help maintain overall health.
- Discussing surgical options. These might include removing dead tissue, cleaning the wound and closing the edges as much as possible. The surgeon may take tissue from healthy skin to perform the repair.
