What is the role of the nasogastric tube fitting?

Nasogastric tubes are thin, flexible plastic medical devices that are inserted through the nasal cavity to reach the stomach.

When is it necessary to fit the nasogastric tube?

It is necessary to fit the nasogastric tube when:

- you cannot feed naturally (you cannot swallow, have altered mental status, throat cancer or are endotracheally intubated);
- you need to be given medication;
- you need gastric aspiration (stomach pumping) to remove stomach contents (ingestion of toxic substances, gastric obstruction, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, etc.).

How is the patient prepared for nasogastric tube insertion?

There is no prior preparation required for nasogastric tube insertion.

In order to perform the service, please purchase 1-2 nasogastric tubes, leucoplast, a 50 ml syringe, gloves, water-soluble lubricant. If you are having the procedure to perform gastric emptying, please purchase a collection bag.

How is the procedure performed?

At the beginning of the session the medical staff who have been assigned will explain the procedure to you. Then, with your consent, the nasogastric tube will be inserted. The nurse or doctor will ask you to sit in a chair with your back straight and your head tilted up and will give you a glass of water and a straw through which you can drink. He or she will insert the tube up one nostril and ask you to take small sips of water as you go to ease the tube down your oesophagus. If you have increased discomfort, feel choking or feel like vomiting the nurse will stop performing the procedure until your condition improves. The probe will be advanced to the mark, the position of the probe is checked, and then the probe is secured with leucoplast. The healthcare professional will make sure your condition is good.

What are the complications of exudates?
Nasogastric probing may cause nausea or choking. Complications may include aspiration of gastric contents into the trachea or small amounts of bleeding from the nasal passages.

What are the contraindications to nasogastric sampling?
Nasogastric sampling is contraindicated if you have suffered a facial or craniocerebral trauma or if you have ingested caustic substances.
