Blood tests

What is involved in taking blood samples for analysis at home

Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical tests.

For example, a blood test can be used to:
✓ assess your general health
✓ check if you have an infection
✓ see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are working
✓ screen for certain genetic conditions

The blood test usually involves taking a blood sample from your arm. The arm is a convenient part of the body to use as it can be easily uncovered. The usual place to take a sample from is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface.

Blood samples from children are often taken from the back of the hand. Their skin may be numbed with a special spray or cream before the sample is taken.

What happens during a blood test?

1. The nurse will put a tourniquet (a tight band) around your upper arm. This tightens the arm, temporarily slowing the flow of blood and causing the vein to swell, making it easier to take the sample.
2. Before taking the sample, the nurse will clean the skin area with an antiseptic wipe.
3. The nurse will insert a needle attached to a syringe or special container into the vein. The syringe is used to collect the sample of your blood. You may feel a slight stinging or scratching sensation when the needle is inserted, but it should not be painful. If you don't like needles and blood, tell the nurse so she can make you feel more comfortable.
4. After the sample has been taken, the nurse will release the tourniquet and remove the needle. She will apply pressure to the skin for a few minutes using a cotton swab. A patch may be placed over the site of the puncture to keep it clean.

Only a small amount of blood is drawn during the collection, so you should not experience any significant side effects.
However, some people feel dizzy and faint during and after the harvest. If this has happened to you in the past, tell the nurse carrying out the collection so that she is aware and can help you feel more comfortable.
After the harvest, you may have a small bruise where the needle went in. Bruising can be painful, but is usually harmless and goes away within a few days.

After the test

Our nurse will deliver your blood samples to the closest (or to your preferred) laboratory.

The Care Hub partners who will come to your or your loved one's home are certified and experienced nurses who we'd welcome into our own home.
Because your safety or that of your loved ones is paramount, we interview each nurse (2 of our colleagues attend the interview), ask for and check medical clearance, certificate of behavioral integrity, licensure and (if needed) references.
Many of our partners are recently or soon-to-be retired because we believe they have rich life experience, patience and great respect for the people they care for, and a natural desire to care for others. But we also work with people of other ages who are looking for flexible work and are also kind, respectful and empathetic.
You only need your doctor's recommendation. Before the visit, please send us this recommendation to [email protected] so that we can tell the nurse what kind of samples she will collect.
