Our childhood would not have the same charm without grandparents. They are the ones who comforted us when we were upset. They pulled our sleighs on the mornings of the first snow. They read us wonderful stories and patiently taught us later to read them to ourselves. They enjoyed the gaiety with which we smooched their cheeks, hair or moustaches. And we were happy, charmed, relieved, happy, amazed, delighted. These feelings have stayed with us today as a result of their care for us, for which we are grateful.
Our grandparents are or were taken care of. But in Romania there are 200,000 senior citizens with low pensions who are not helped by their families. Perhaps they no longer have a family, perhaps their children and grandchildren have forgotten them. 200,000 lonely grandparents. We know them. There are the neighbours on two who walk slowly down the stairs with their canes and walk even more slowly up them. There is the lady across the street we see going to the market with her shopping cart. It is the gentleman who once asked us to help him carry a sack of potatoes. It's the lady who walks in the same park next to the block every day in good weather.
How about making that number smaller by giving away more of the good received to a few of these lonely grandparents?
The "For Lonely Grandparents" campaign started out of the belief that each of us has an elderly person in our family to whom we are grateful for the role they have played in our lives and that we could, together, direct our gratitude towards the lonely elderly in Arad, București, Cluj, Oradea sau Timișoara by paying for some care services for them. For some of us more fortunate, 30 lei means a coffee outing. For lonely senior citizens, 30 lei is an hour when they have someone to talk to, someone to open the door for them, someone to help them.
We need your generosity. Pay for an hour or more of care for the elderly in Arad, București, Cluj, Oradea sau Timișoara, and we will keep your money safe and direct it to grandparents who will receive care from people you trust.
We also need your kindness and please let us know if there are any lonely elderly people in your neighbourhood. We will also work with organisations, institutions and churches in Arad, București, Cluj, Oradea sau Timișoara who know of such people, with low pensions and no help from family or relatives, to put us in touch with them.
The ”Campaign for Lonely Grandparents” lasts as long as you or other generous people choose to get involved. Our effort, The Care Hub, is ongoing, with no deadline. As long as you buy an hour of care, we will give it away to lonely grandparents.
